Media Olympiad
To increase interest in topics related to media literacy among students and teachers, we launched the Media Olympiad for secondary school students in 2023 under the auspices of Helena Langšádlová, Minister of Science, Research and Innovation, and Luďek Niedermayer, Member of the European Parliament. We have decided to test the concept in a pilot year, which will only take place in the Moravian-Silesian Region, so that we can hold a national round of the Olympiad in 2024. Media literacy is important in order for one to orient himself in the information space as well as society as a whole. The Olympiad helps popularise this field among students and educators and attract the attention it deserves. The 1st online round of the pilot year of the Media Olympiad (which was only held in the Moravian-Silesian Region) took place in January 2023, and 69 teams from all districts of the region took part in it. The 1st round consisted of a test of students' knowledge and their ability to apply it practically when working with specific texts and images. You can try it out on the Olympiad website. The 5 best teams made it to the final round, which was held directly in the library. They were tasked with preparing a short educational or awareness video, which they presented to the evaluation committee, and they received a text in which they had to search for manipulation and argumentative fallacies and verify its content. Thanks to great partners and sponsors, finalists can look forward to many excursions and lectures, and the winning team will go to see the European Parliament in Strasbourg. We are organizing a nationwide round in 2024, and we believe that it will be as well received as it is in our region! Three-member student teams accompanied by a teacher can register on the Olympiad website. The website also contains the rules of participation and a sample of the questions in the 1st round and the assignment for the 2nd round of the Olympiad.
