In Czech libraries since 2017. The project focuses on building a positive relationship with books and reading among the youngest children, in cooperation with their parents.
The project supports reading in children from the first days of school and lays the foundations for regular reading.
The project was created in 2003 in the Children’s Library at the Jiří Mahen Library in Brno, with the idea of promoting reading among children entering the 1st grade of primary schools. The goal is to combine unforgettable experiences from the first year of school with the first visit to a library, and to help children and their parents on their new path to reading, which begins when they start school. We want to show that a library can be a good friend on this journey. In this project, we organize activities for children and for parents, in which we try to help them manage this sometimes difficult journey and recommend interesting books that children and their parents can read together.
‘Noc s Andersenem’ (A Night with Andersen) was created in the library in Uherské Hradiště in 2000, and the number of libraries involved in this project continues to grow. On the anniversary of the birth of Hans Christian Andersen (2 April 1805 – 4 August 1875), children can spend a magical night in the library. 2 April also marks International Children’s Book Day . Every year, ‘Noc s Andersenem’ (A Night With Andersen) carries a beautiful message from a contemporary Czech writer, along with illustrations by selected leading illustrators for children and youth.
A month-long intensive reading promotion. Libraries organise public readings in interesting places. The “Reader of the Year” competition is announced. The theme of this year’s March and the whole year 2022 is sustainability in libraries.
