We are the living room of the city, which tries to connect and open new horizons and topics. We like new challenges and we love a library full of people.

Projects

Art therapy at the library

Typ: Seniors Kids

This activity focuses on the creative process, not the result. Participants get to enjoy the process of creating something in the safe environment of the library. Topics are selected for the artwork, and participants share their work with each other, etc. Art therapy allows people to relax, share with others and create art with different kinds of materials. This activity aids relaxation and self-discovery. Art therapy for teenage girls helps them understand their own bodies and the thoughts that adolescent girls often have. Art therapy for adults is aimed at relaxation and creating space for oneself, allowing them to "escape" from their everyday work and domestic duties.

Gamebook "Bratrstvo tygrů" (Brotherhood of Tigers)

Typ: Kids

The Gamebook educational activity is the first book/brochure published by the library in Milevsko. It is a fictional chronicle set in 1902 of a group of boys from Milevsko who are also the most important historical figures of the town. You can read the Gamebook at home, or take a trip to the most interesting places in Milevsko with a group of boys and experience exciting adventures with them. Gamebook is based on a story prepared for the library's suburban summer camp, inspired by the discovery of a mysterious passage in the Milevsko Monastery. Gamebook introduces readers to the town's most important characters and mysterious places. The game needs to be "prepared" by someone older before reading, but then you can experience the adventure together.

Knihožrouti (Bookworms)

Typ: Kids

"Kniihožrouti" is a programme for preschool classes in kindergartens. Its aim is to interest children in reading at an age when they cannot read themselves yet. When reading with children, we want to stop for a while, think about what we are reading and take away the things that are useful in our lives. The "Knihožrouti" programme lasts one school year and starts with the children visiting the library, after which we visit them at their kindergarten every month. We arrive with a pile of books and show them that reading can be fun. The children also get some "homework" to do at home with their parents. At the final meeting in June, the children get to watch a theatrical performance at the library. "Knihožrouti" helps us bring children closer to "their" library, show them the potential of books as a source of entertainment, create a healthy habit and inadvertently give them a future advantage in their education. It has been proven that children who read (and read for fun) have an academic advantage.

Knižní prcek (Little Reader)

Typ: Kids

"Knižní prcek" is held every Friday in the children's department. This is an hour-long programme for children from birth till 3 years of age. You can look forward to reading, theatre, presentation of new books to parents and grandparents, creative and physical activities. Admission is free and you don't have to book a seat. The details of the programme are published ahead of time on Facebook. This activity brings together the parents and grandparents of small children and provides a place where they can spend their free time together. It gives them inspiration for children's books and presents reading activities for the littlest ones, but it most importantly helps raise little readers from the crib.

Suburban library summer camps

Typ: Kids

We've been organizing summer camps in the library since 2016, and over 200 children have participated in them over five years. Despite the name, these camps aren't just about books and reading, although these are a natural part of them. They're about adventures and groups of friends. We don't just sit in the library, we spend time nature, have scavenger hunts and do other typical summer camp activities. The camps are run by experienced leaders, and they fill up within a few hours of their announcement. "Our" children love the camps as much as we do. Library summer camps are slowly shaping the local children's reading community. The children that participate in the camp feel at home at the library, they spend their free time there and they like to meet us at our other events. These summer camps are helping us raise readers, regardless of how much they read at home or at school.

Association of Lovers of Books and Fragrant Coffee

Typ: Sustainability

This regular meeting of lovers of books, culture and (not only) coffee is held in the library once a month, and during the Covid pandemic it was held more frequently online. The Association of Lovers of Books and Fragrant Coffee inspires, brings people together and provides a safe space. People can come share their impressions of books they read or theatrical plays they've seen, or just have a conversation about life and experiences.

Memory training

Typ: Seniors

The library in Milevsko allows people to come train their memory every week under the guidance of a certified trainer. We've been publishing memory training exercises on the library's Facebook page for several years now, and we also train together live at 1 p.m. on the same day. The first lesson of the month also includes professional commentary by the trainer. We also hold memory training sessions at the local seniors club with individuals, and in spring or autumn courses with follow-up lessons. Memory training is beneficial to people with an injury or illness as well as others regardless of age. It helps to keep our brain sharp and alert when looking for solutions in critical situations and helps it function normally.

In the footsteps of Abbot Gerlach

Typ: Kids

This lesson focuses on the history and establishment of the Milevsko Monastery (the oldest monastery in south Bohemia). We discuss the life and work of Abbot Gerlach (the founder and first abbot of the monastery) and other chroniclers in our country. This discussion was created as a project day. We walk through the town to the monastery and search for Gerlach's lost chronicle inside the Milevsko Monastery based on the information discussed at the meeting. We enter areas that cannot be accessed by regular visitors to the monastery. We never know if we will discover the chronicle and emerge from the monastery to return to real life.

Jewish people in our town

Typ: Community Kids

In this event, we discuss basic information about Jewish people and their history with pupils, after which we focus on the Jewish community in our town, which was quite numerous before World War II. We also take a walk through the town centre and look at places where Jewish families used to live (e.g. the rabbi, the Vrkoč family, F. Ferda and others). This way pupils get to learn about the history of the town they live in.
